of the guns. Then on we went again at daybreak - ever on. We followed in the rear of the of the retreating army. Once more it thundered & it rained & we got wetter & still wetter (if that were possible), till we were very thoroughly soaked through & through & also, we nearly
died of starvation! Our emergency rations are all with the kitchen car, which alas, is not with us! So at present we're living on black bread & the remnants of the bully-beef we brought away with us - & precious little there is of it too! I feel so tired & sleepy & hungry & cross - fit company for no human being - so in case I "grouse" I'll stop!
23rd. To continue from yesterday. We encamped by the roadside again last night, just dumped ourselves down beside the Tommies, thankful for a corner that was not a "sea of mud" - "Any old thing will do" - must now be our motto I think! The country is a dreary, dreary sight. It's pitiable to see that tragic, forlorn procession wandering over the spaces & levels of this vast Dobrudja district - the whole population of cities &
