Description
present. We gathered enough, from the officers of our Division, to know, that something very disastrous "somewhere" hads occurred & that things are very serious. It's the very vagueness of it all that appalls[appals] one. We may all of us be prisoners before the night comes! In fact, that seems, at present, to be no slender possibility. But if it's to be, it's to be & "what's the use of worrying"?! There seems to be no spot anywhere that we can call our own! All that remains for us is this horrible place, with its dirt & heat & flies & smells, the intolerable noise of carts, soldiers & horses & guns. The booming seems to get louder & louder.
Our stable yard is fast filling up, refugées[refugees], tommies & so forth. The refugées[refugees] look so homeless & pathetic - like us - only I don't think we've got to the pathetic stage yet! At present we're reposing in "alive" straw
very tired & hungry & hot, & ready to "grouse" at anything. Our tempers are best left alone!! I'll not write any more in case I "let loose" on you people! The S.W. have got the starch taken out of 'em this time - Keep smilin' say I!!
