22nd Sept: 1916 Odessa

Odessa at last! We arrived about 8 o'cl: last night,tired & "piggy" & cross & very thankful to get out of the train for a bit. We got a tremendous reception here on our arrival. The British Consul & a number of Russian & Serbian officials were at the station to receive us - such a brilliant display of uniforms & "brass hats". Mrs. "Consul" & quite a number of the British Colony were also at the station & they all gave us such a very warm welcome.
After a few speeches we marched off & were conveyed in "Dr?sky's" [Droskies] (Russian cabs) to the unknown. These dr?shky are very unique - quite the largest part of the "outfit" of the said vehicle is the long haired, ragged-bearded, top-hatted, heavily "dressing-gowned" driver ("izv?shtchik") ("[ishvoshtnik]").
Well, off we started in the keenest spirit of excited anticipation - despite our great weariness. We had a magnificant [magnificent] drive, I wish you could have beheld us bowling swiftly along, our fine
