Description
arsenals & barracks form a triangle, one side resting upon the River Moskva, surrounded by an enormous pyramidal wall of pale pink brick, broken at intervals by square watch-towers & pierced by five gates. I wish you could have seen it all. It is the most wonderful & beautiful place imaginable & it was such a perfect evening, a lovely sunset, crimson & gold. The Kremlin is the Holy Spot of all Russia -the principal gate is called "The Gate of the Redeemer" ("Spassky") & every hat has to be removed upon entering it, in honour of the Ikon of
the Saviour, which is placed above it. Inside this squ gateway is a huge square - containing numerous Royal Palaces, Churches & the Tsar Bell, the largest bell in the world. Behind is the Bell Tower, where there is a most wonderful view of Moscow, to the S. the Imperial Palaces, Church of the Redeemer & Sparrow Hill; to the N. the Court of Justice, Historical Museum & The Great Theatre; to the E the Foundling Hospital & Trading Rows & on all sides the Kremlin, surrounded by an ocean of houses with numberless gaily colored [coloured]
churches domes, with wooded hills in the distance.
