17th Sept: 1916 Train - en route for Odessa

I finished my last letter just as we were approaching Moscow, so I will continue from where I left off.
Alas! Moscow is behind us. It's the most wonderful & fascinating old place I've ever seen. But it is really the Kremlin which makes Moscow unique, with an intangible influence & sense of association connected with it that no one can describe, as one thinks of its historic past & of Napoleon. In the centre of the city, picturesque on a hill stands the Kremlin- the place so revered by the Russians, as being associated with all that is most dear to them. It is here that the consecration of the crowned head takes place & the monarch is proclaimed by the ringing of the great bell of "Ivan Veliky"; it is here that the Dukes of Moscow laid their foundation-stones & here the first Romanov became Tsar; & here are all the tombs of the Ruriks & Romanovs who ruled when Petrograd was not built. Through this gate Napoleon entered the city; in that church his horses were stabled. All the many buildings which the Kremlin comprises - churches, palaces
