They say we will probably get to Moscow to-morrow - but expect that's a myth. One thing one does learn in Russia & that is to wait! "Schechást".
The scenery up till now has not been very interesting, very flat, a wide trackless country. What strikes one very much, is, Russia's vast spaces, simple, unchanging, miles upon miles of pines, silver birches & firs, vast moorland & water - sodden spaces. There is hardly a sign of life. Little grey wood-shingled cottages, the house not to be known from the stable; little scrapy patches of oats, very short in the straw &very poor in the ear; & maize, maize stretching across the great distances. Autumn is very early in Russia & the colorings [colourings] are beautiful, brilliant reds & yellows.
16th. We have just arrived at Yaroslav [Yaroslavl], a big junction & quite an important town on the Volga. We crossedthe river about 1.30 - it is magnificant [magnificent] in size & the largest in Europe - 3 times as long as "The" Rhine! Many of us know what the Rhine is to the Germans, well, so also is the Volga to the Russians. They are very proud of their river & justly too. It is of the
