Description
been 4 nights & 3 days in the train & no word of nearing Moscow. We left Archangel at a late hour on Tuesday night & we did get a send off a most splendid one. We were deeply touched & impressed with it all.Roll-call was at 10 o'clock - we all "fell-in" in full regimentals, haversacks, water-bottles etc:- after a few words of "worldly wisdom" & a little "soft-sodder" from Dr. Inglis, we took a tender farewell of the old "Hunspill" ["Hanspiel"]. The "staff" were most sporting & escorted us down the gangway & across to the pier with an impromptu string band & singing "Keep the Home Fires burning" & other war like ditties.
When we arrived at the pier we found a great crowd waiting to see us off. Both sides of the pier were lined with Russian soldiers & as we marched through them we were almost deafened with their cheering. Seldom have I heard such hearty cheering. Then as we lined up in front of the train they struck up "God Save The King" & cheered & cheered & better cheered! It was great. After that there were farewell speeches - The Consul, Russian Governor,
