Description
a bare post with a little metal Ikon nailed on. So sad, yet simple, so different from our churchyards with their elaborate stones & crosses.
Yesterday afternoon we all went in to Archangel - left here at 2 o'clock & got back about 6. The Admiralty sent a motor launch for us so we travelled "in state". It took us about ¾ of an hour en route - a very pretty sail all the way. We got quite a reception in Archangel, the Consul governor etc: were all meeting us. We divided up in lots & were escorted round Archangel by various kind citizens.
There's not much to see in "the city", but it was interesting, as being our first Russian town. There is only one main street, about 5 miles long - there is no Residential part, rich & poor all seem jumbled up together. The shops are very poor, just large stores. The streets are awful, huge cobbles, no pretence of smoothness & no pavements.
The place is swarming with churches & they are all very gaudy. Outside, white with colored [coloured] domes, blue, green, yellow & dotted over with gold
