Description
Archangel, but are in port about 5 miles further up the River, at Bacheridza - the government wharf. On Sunday after we arrived, there was such a "fuss" on board. The British Consul, & Russian Governor from Archangel with "Ctes"-arrived on board, there several British Transport & naval officers & Russian officers appeared on the scene & there was such a lot of "pow-wowing" went on! They all displayed an extraordinary amount of interest in us & they seemed highly amused at us!
Sunday evening the naval officers & several of the Russian officers dined with us on board & we had a smoking concert afterwards. One of the Russians sang magnificantly [magnificently], he was a well-known operatic singer in Petrograd before the war. We have quite a lot of talent among ourselves, so managed to keep things going till a pretty late hour.
Yesterday, Monday, we were allowed ashore for 3 hours - oh the joy of Terra firma once again! All the natives work at timber here, cutting, trimming & shipping it - peasants, discharged soldiers, "prisoners of war" etc:- we noticed a lot of Chinamen to the fore.
