Letter from the Food Controller regarding food shortages
Description
Letter regarding bread shortages sent to all householders from Lord Devonport, Food Controller, on 29 May 1917. Typed in black ink on cream paper. King's monogram at top of page. Letter has creases where it has been folded into quarters to fit in its envelope.

This letter calls on everyone to reduce their consumption of bread. It encourages the wearing of a purple ribbon to show dedication to food economy.
The letter is signed by Lord Devonport, Food Controller. Hudson Kearley (later Viscount Devonport) was a grocer and politician. Appointed Minister of Food Control in 1916, he was the author of the proposal to introduce rationing.
