All the warring nations of the First World War understood the value of entertaining their troops and this included and extended to those recovering in hospital wards. These injured soldiers had seen and experienced the worse of combat, and now in recuperation, needed the entertainments and delights from their peace-time lives to boost their morale and speed their recovery. Prominent society women often hosted events with music and comedy to lift the wounded men's spirits.
