The use of the engine in warfare was a new concept at the outset of World War One. Here we see an illustration of an experiment conducted by the West Riding Horse Artillery to ascertain whether motor vehicles could be used to haul big guns instead of horses. They travelled from the Midlands to Grimsby towing the guns behind six-cylinder Sheffield-Simplex motors. The journey took nine hours when before it would have taken 3 days.
