Description

Gylen Castle can be seen as a small, square, stone built ruin. There are small arched windows and it is covered in Ivy which has spread to the ground below. The castle sits atop a jagged stone cliff which dominates the landscape and overlooks the Firth of Lorn.

Gylen Castle is a ruin which stands on the island of Kerrera, not far from the coast at Oban, in the Firth of Lorn. The Castle was built for the MacDougall clan in 1582 but they did not own it for long as it was sacked by the Covenanters under General Leslie during the Three Kingdoms wars.

In 2006 a 10 year restoration funded by both Historic Environment Scotland and worldwide members of the clan MacDougall and the castle was reopened to the public.
