Accompanying text from the volume 'German Raid on Scarborough' reads, "The houses, 16 and 17, St Nicholas Cliff. No.17 was empty. Fortunately the occupants in No. 16 were uninjured. The damage was done by two shells. The shell which struck No. 17 came right through the house and then struck Ashley's Boarding House behind St Nicholas Parade".
