Accompanying text from the volume 'German Raid on Scarborough' reads, " The Royal Hotel - Another of the favourite and well known houses in Scarborough to which visitors resort in great numbers during the season. It was badly hit, and enormous damage was done to the royal suite of rooms which were occupied by the late Duke of Clarence when he visited Scarborough. Opposite the hotel, between it and the sea, are the St Nicholas Gardens with their winding walks to the shore, with the Town Hall Buildings on the left. The Council Chamber was also entered without ceremony by one of these unwelcome visitors and damage done."
