Accompanying text from the volume 'German Raid on Scarborough' reads, "The large shell which struck the Workhouse Buildings, entering the old men's bedroom in the Albert hall, then passing through the dining room on the first floor, and burying itself in the clay. The inmates had only just left the room some two or three minutes, and were in the corridor close by. No one was injured. The shell measured 22 inches in length with the nose off, and 6 inches in diameter, and weighed 83 lbs. - the original weight being 100 lbs. It was fired in the second part of the bombardment.
Fragments of shell which fell in the Seamer Road district, weighing between three and four pounds each. "
