Accompanying text from the volume 'German Raid on Scarborough' reads, "No.79, Commercial Street, about a mile inland, in the West Ward,was very badly damaged by a shell. An old lady nearly ninety years of age and her daughter were living in the house. The daughter was struck in the back by a fragment of the shell and badly wounded, and was taken to the hospital. The mother was uninjured save from the bad effects of the shock. They were discovered at 3 o'clock in the afternoon by the St. John's Voluntary Ambulance Brigade; huddled together amidst the ruins of their home, which up to then they had refused to leave. This Brigade, under the head, Dr Wilkinson, did yeoman service in searching out the stricken folk and in rendering first aid and conveying the wounded to a place of safety, and they had a very busy day of it. The Brigade headquarters are in the Y.M.C.A ."
