The accompanying text in 'The Clans of the Scottish Highlands' by James Logan begins as follows: "CLANN MHIC DHUGHIL - THE MAC DUGALS The MacDugals of Lorn are descended from the ancient princes of Argyle and the Isles. The patronymic is derived from Dugal, son of the famous Somerled, who held sovereign power in these parts during a great portion of the twelfth century. The name signifies the dark-complexioned stranger, and would thus seem to point to the Dalriadic settlement in 503 as the period when such an appellation was imposed."
