Borthwick Castle, 12 miles south east of Edinburgh, is perhaps Scotland's best preserved medieval castle. It was constructed in 1430 by Sir William Borthwick on the site of a previous structure which had served as the ancestral home of the Borthwick family. It was visited by Mary Queen of Scots twice and it is said that she still haunts the building dressed in the page boy disguise she used to escape the besieged castle. In 1650 the castle was attacked by the men of Oliver Cromwell and the damage their cannons made is still in evidence on the castle walls. The castle has operated as a hotel and wedding venue since 1973.
