The cost of war, while measurable in its financial and human loss, cannot be fully described by quantification. The toll the war took is incomprehensible, which is perhaps most evident in the reticence of the survivors. The battlefields saw a modernisation of weaponry, with ghastly effects, and society suffered through long separations, occupations, bombardment and shortages. The First World War was truly a global event that left lingering conflicts within and between nations.
While remembrance of the Great War varied from country to country and has shifted over the decades, in Britain, the years immediately following the war focused on honouring the dead, both known and unknown, and seeing that the sacrifice of these soldiers meant lasting victory of democracy over dictatorship.
