George Waterston and Sons, Ltd., were specialist printers, stationers, and sealing wax manufacturers. Although established in 1752, it wasn't until the later part of the 18th century that the company began to produce ink. The company traded as Ferrier and Waterston from 1786 to 1831, and then as George Waterston and Son from 1831. The company gained a contract in 1864 to print banknotes, and continued to produce paper money until 1970. The company went into liquidation in 2004, although wax production continued for a short time at Peffermill Industrial Estate. Find out more about Edinburgh's printing heritage from
