Sir Alan Cobham was an early pioneer of aviation from his days as a WW1 Flying Corps pilot. He set many long distance flight records and advocated the importance of civil aviation to the nation. He organised a series of flying tours of the United Kingdom, Ireland and South Africa which became affectionately known as 'Sir Alan Cobham's Flying Circus' to promote flying to the public. He later played a significant part in the development of air-to-air refuelling systems.
