Balmoral Castle is one of the Scottish residencies of The Royal Family. Located between Braemar and Ballater near the village of Crathie, the estate lies in Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire. The estate was purchased in 1848 by Prince Albert. The existing house which stood on the site was demolished and the present castle completed in 1856, built by architect William Smith, who was the city architect for Aberdeen at the time, with direction from Prince Albert himself.
Balmoral Castle stands within Balmoral Estate, part of the Cairngorm National Park. The estate comprises 20,000 hectares of land which is made up of different land types from woodland to open mountains, containing some of Scotland's highest Munro's. Balmoral is a working estate, with the likes of Highland, Fell and Haflinger ponies, cattle and other farmed animals on the land. Many traditional activities take place such as grouse shooting, horse-riding but they also offer new events for the public such as guided walks and even have weddings held on the estate
