The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This mansion, the residence of James Russell, Esq., is built on an elevated situation not far from South Queensferry, Linlithgowshire. It lies between Hopetoun House on the one side and Dalmeny Park on the other, and stands in the midst of a very richly cultivated district.
The ancient castle of Dundas was built in the twelfth century, and consisted of a massive tower, of which all the main features have been preserved, and which affords a characteristic specimen of the castellated architecture of Scotland at the most interesting period of its history. Attached to this tower, the modern house was built by the late James Dundas, Esq., about the year 1820, from the designs of Mr Burn, architect.'
