This album shows a series of Calotype pictures of the people, places, architecture and life of artist, John Muir Wood. The album contains images by different artists and there is uncertainty over whom some of the images should be attributed to.
Many of the images were initially attributed to John Eckford Lauder although it is now thought that Wood is the principal artist. Lauder was a painter, born in Silvermills, Edinburgh in1811, Lauder's older brother was the painter Robert Scott Lauder and he and his brother studied in Rome which influenced Lauder's work. Lauder was a friend of fellow artist David Octavious Hill, whose work also appears in this volume. Both Hill and Lauder had exhibited and held positions within the Royal Scottish Academy, Hill also assisted Lauder as an agent to him for his works in later years.
The final artist credited with work in the album is Joseph Cundell. Though given as Cundell in the album, this may be a reference to Joseph Cundall a publisher, author and photographer from Norwich who was involved in setting up the Photographic Club (sometimes known as the Calotype Club) in 1847.
