In 1919, David Watt returned to Edinburgh from France following his First World War service in the British army and later in the Mounted Military Police. That same year, David met Catherine "Cassie" Richardson Ritchie, daughter of clockmaker Leone "Leo" Levi Ritchie and his wife Mary Sim Ritchie (nee Hill) at the social guild of the United Free Presbyterian Church on Regent Street, Portobello. However, it was seven years before the couple could afford to marry.
David and Cassie married on 10 July 1926 with a reception held at Portobello Town Hall. The witnesses to David and Cassie's wedding were John Ronald Macfarlane Duncan (who would later marry David's sister Mollie) and Cassie's sister Annie "Nannie" Ritichie.
The couple had one child; a son named David Ritchie Watt, born Friday 13 May 1927.
