The Museum of Childhood started in 1955 as part of Lady Stair's Close (now the Writers' Museum) before moving to its present site on the Royal Mile in 1957. It was the first museum dedicated to the history of childhood in the world. The building had a major refurbishment in 1985/86, expanding to take over the building next door and then reopening in 1986. It was also refurbished in 2017.
The exact location of this site is unknown but prior to 1986, the entrance to the Museum of Childhood was in Hyndford’s Close.
