Description
Red silk banner with painted design on both sides, made from two separate pieces of fabric, with silk corded fringe. Title scroll, NATIONAL
UNION OF RAILWAYMEN EDINBURGH AND DISTRICT BRANCHES. Obverse: large central panel depicting three railwaymen linking arms around a globe and clasping hands. On the globe are clasped ands and UNITED AROUND THE WORLD. A dove with a banner PEACE AND GOODWILL. flies above. Motto scroll, UNITED WE STAND UPHOLDING THE WORLD ON THE BEDROCK OF JUSTICE, TRUTH & INTEGRITY. Six smaller
panels to sides: a guard with a green flag; Stevenson's Rocket; a porter with baggage trolley; a signal man; the first steam ship; a navvie standing in front of a tunnel, holding a pick.

The branch minutes of Edinburgh No. 1 on May 11th 1919 state a decision to raise funds 'to have a banner for the district' and on November 9th: 'agreed that Mr. Cynicus prepare the design'. On January 18th 1920 they decided to have the banner ready for May Day. To pay for it they ran a competition, where the watch was sealed in a box, and people had to guess the time it would stop. This brought in about £66. The banner was carried in the procession to gather funds for Leith Hospital where it won the first prize in a competition. On June 12th it was decided that the banner should be photographed and cards of the photos should be sold and on June 20th a football match between Edinburgh and Glasgow Railwaymen was arranged to raise money. There is a note on the banner that Tom Oswald renovated it in May 1930.
Founded 1876 as the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, the Union, in 1913 merged with three other unions and changed the name to the National Union of Railwaymen.
