A Coast Scene
The fisher folk based around the Firth of Forth made up close-knit communities with their own sense of identity. Whole families spent their lives engaged in the industry, from young children to elderly grandparents. This etching suggests the inter-generational nature of their work, as well as realistically recording their environment, dress and various duties.

Such images are closely related to the early photography of David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson, who produced calotypes of the Newhaven fisher families during the mid 1840s. Geikie did not live to witness the emergence of photography and its documentary potential. However, he would have known Hill on a personal level through the Scottish Academy.
