Lord Kitchener, born Jun 24th 1850, was a legendary British soldier and strategist. He first gained fame for commanding British forces at the battle of Omduman and securing the control of the Sudan in 1898, He was Army Chief of Staff in the Boer War and at one time acted as Commander in Chief of the Army in India. At the outbreak of War in 1914 Kitchener was brought into the cabinet as Secretary of State for War. During this time he ran a massive recruitment drive and managed to amass the largest recruited Army the United Kingdom had ever seen. He was the face of the campaign and his likeness appeared on the now iconic 'Your Country Needs You' posters distributed at the time. Kitchener was killed half way through the war when a warship he was travelling in was destroyed by a German mine in the North Sea.
