Description
24th I had no time to get any of this written yesterday as I was on the "go" all day & at the opera in the evening.
Mrs. Milne & I spent the day to-gether & a very interesting one it was too. After roll-call at 10 o'cl: we set off for town. On our way in we met a Russian funeral. I must tell you about it as it really looked more like a "passing show" than a funeral! A huge hearse, fitted with a high white canopy, & decked with heavy draperies of the same color [colour]; drawn slowly along by 4 white horses covered with trailing white network. By the side of this imposing car four men walk, 2 at the front & 2 at the back, while, preceding them, are four to six others, holding in their hands lit lamps somewhat similar in appearance to ordinary carriage lamps - all these attendants being dressed in light greyish-yellow tail-coat suits, with tall hats of an identcal hue to complete the quaint ensemble! The whole thing is really elaborate almost to grotesqueness! Mrs. Milne & I spent a most interesting morning down at the Jew's Market - the English Parson, who is a great authority on antiques - escorted us.
