Description
Geikie's familiarity with the Edinburgh art establishment made it a ripe source of inspiration. His admission to the Trustees' Academy, followed by years of exhibiting experience and his eventual election to the Scottish Academy, brought him into contact with many other artists.

This etching suggests that Geikie was not afraid to critique his fellow artists. Three well-dressed painters are presented looking from a studio window and laughing at another artist who is working in the opposite building. The original pen and ink drawing from which the etching derives (now in the collection of the British Museum) shows the ridiculed artist surrounded by his wife and children. As such, the painters may be jeering at his poverty, rather than his creative efforts.

Regardless, it appears that Geikie's intention was to comment on snobbery in artistic circles. The satirical tone of the work is heightened by its simplified drawing style.
