Description
Two metal shaped badges that were worn by members of the ARP during the Second World War. The badge on the left has the initials A.R.P in gold writing on a blue background. Above the writing is an engraving of a gold crown. The second badge is larger and has an oval shape frame. This is a dark red colour with a silver border. The silver coloured lettering at the bottom reads 'civil defence'. At the top it reads L.A.R.P with a break in the middle and an engraving of a silver crown. A horizontal strip in the middle contains the words 'instructor' in blue.

These badges were issued from 1937 to 1943 to volunteers who completed their training as Air Raid Precaution volunteers. There were over one and a half million ARP wardens in Britain. Amongst their duties were ensuring safety during an emergency for example by helping people reach air raid shelters and supervising the blackout.
At night a blackout was enforced in Edinburgh and you had to cover your windows so that no light escaped. This was to make it more difficult for the German bombers to know where to drop bombs. Many children had great fun playing hide and seek in the blackouts.
