Title
Scene at All Hallow Fair
Description
Hallow Fair was popular with children as well as adults. This etching shows one of the amusements of the fairground: a wooden merry-go-round fitted with makeshift horses and carriages.
Later carousels and roundabouts would be powered by steam, but this early example is turned by young boys. Children who worked these amusements were normally rewarded with free rides. Geikie's image reveals the boys inside the machinery, with their legs visible beneath the platform of the roundabout. In the foreground, another group of children are playing with miniature toy horses.
