Description
Just a wee sleep after breakfast, as last night it was a case of standing in the corridors, so not much sleep agoing. Then we had an early lunch & all out on the "razzle-dazzle". We managed to put in quite a lot, & needless to say, the fascination of Paris is upon me & they will have difficulty in tearing me away to-morrow! It's not a case of "doing" Paris, nothing like that with me, I'm just going to see the places I want most to see & just want to feel myself in Paris - catching a tiny breath of its atmosphere. We went first of all to The Louvre, surely one of the most beautiful places in the world? Being war time, it is closed, so we were unable to enter & see all the priceless treasures of art, pictures & sculptures, it is said to contain.
We wandered on to Notre Dame, what a splendid example of the Gothic architecture of the 13th Century it is, with its two huge towers towering up in to the sky! Outside & inside the cathedral is beautiful. There was a service going on, so W. & I sat for ½ an hour in the magnificent, solemn, old cathedral & listened to the fresh boy's voices of the choir & the strains of the fine organ. At present, Notre Dame is v. much sand-bagged outside - a sure protection from these devilish Huns, but not an aid to beauty!
