The Sailors' Home, also known as the Seamen's House, was paid for by a subscription of £9,000 and built with room for 56 seamen and nine officers and extra beds in the attic to accommodate up to 50 shipwrecked seamen, in much greater comfort than the slums workers usually lived in at the time. The foundation stone was laid in 1883. The building is now the Malmaison Hotel, which opened in 1994.
