Description
Yesterday I was on special duty, so got off at 4 o'cl: & went for such a jolly walk. W. was also off. We climbed the hill opposite to us, commonly known as "Table Mountain", it is one of the highest of our near hills & the view form the top is very fine. Coming home, we struck a goat-fold high up on the mountain side. The Macedonian shepherds were busily milking the herd, so we remained & looked on! There must have been some 60 or 70 goats & all were milked in turn. The shepherds made a little pen & drove them all in to it, at one end was an opening & as the goats came out "two by two", each were milked & then set free. Then the milk was drained, poured in to cans, tied on to the patient little donkeys waiting beside their masters & then the quaint cavalcade wended its way down the mountain side. It was a picturesque sight - all the goats herded to-gether - grey, white & black, each with its collar of wood & brass bell; then the Macedonian shepherds in their rough peasant dress, white homespun shirt & kilted skirt & worsted sewn waistcoat of many colours, a tiny little round embroidered cap, coloured stockings & shoes with turned up toes adorned with tassel at the extreme point of the toe; then the patient grey donkeys laden low with many milk cans - all this procession sleepily wending its way home & as a background the wonderful blue mountains & big red, sinking sun.
