Thomas Nelson, the Edinburgh publisher, had left £50,000 in 1891 to fund the 'erection, furnishing, maintenance and management of Shelter Halls in the poor districts in Edinburgh - to be used as places to which persons of the working classes and others can go to sit and read, write and converse and otherwise occupy themselves'.
The Trustees of Thomas Nelson and the Libraries Committee of Edinburgh worked together to provide four combined halls and libraries, including the branch at McDonald Road. In 1935 ownership of the Halls was transferred to the Council.
