Banner, Leith, Edinburgh & District Coopers' Society Banner, Obverse View
Description
One blue and silver silk damask banner for the Leith, Edinburgh & District Cooper's Society. The banner has a red silk border on three sides. The banner has different painted decoration on both sides. The fringe is blue and white silk along the bottom. There are two metal studs in lower corners tacking down red wool tapes with, 'G.Tutill, 83 City Road, London, sole manufacturer of patent banners', written below. The title scroll cartouche reads, 'LEITH, EDINBURGH & DISTRICT COOPERS' SOCIETY'. The centre roundel has the motto along the bottom, 'UNITED WE STAND. DIVIDED WE FALL'. The the roundel is made up of four paintings; planing down on a horse, nailing up the hoop, trimming the top with a bow saw and nailing down the top of the barrel. All coopers wear aprons, waistcoats, sleeves rolled up and large flat caps.
