Annotation on reverse of item reads 'Bombs were dropped on the junction of Portland Place and Commercial Street at 8:07 pm on 18 July 1940.' Commercial Street is located in Leith, Edinburgh.
In comparison to other Scottish cities, Edinburgh had a fairly quiet war with only 47 high explosive 'missiles' dropped in 14 raids by the Luftwaffe.
On 18th July 1940 at 8.07pm, two 250lb and six 50lb bombs were dropped in Leith on Victoria Dock, and the junction of Commercial Street and Portland Place, as well as other targets in Leith and Newhaven. It was the second air raid on the city.
