Emile Waldteufel 1837-1915,was a French pianist, conductor and composer whose songs were very popular within French society and played at many prestigious balls and various royally attended functions.
The cover illustration shows in the foreground a musician on board a gondola, playing his lute, serenading a lady above on her balcony. In the background lies the romantic city outline of Venice in blueish greys with sparkly lights twinkling in the distance. The musician is dressed in the Tudor costume of a court musician with feathered cap, coat dress with ruffle collar, tights and dainty shoes. The lady is looking down from above wearing her hair piled up on top of her head. The more sumptuous colour of red and brighter tones surround the figure of the lady on the upper left of the illustration, with the colour darkening into the background creating the mystery and allure of Venice in the background. The artist for this music sheet cover is unknown but the use of colour and the sophistication of the story told is something that can be seen in many of the music sheet covers that were printed by M & N Hanhart.
