William Honyman (1756–1825), eldest son of Patrick Honyman of Graemsay and descended from the Orkney bishop Andrew Honyman, was admitted to the Scottish bar in 1777 and rose steadily in public office. Appointed Sheriff-Depute of Lanarkshire in 1786, he became a judge in 1797 as Lord Armadale, later serving as a Lord of Justiciary and receiving a baronetcy in 1804. Regarded as an able and judicious lawyer, he retired from the bench in 1811 and died at Smyllum Park in 1825. Married to Mary M‘Queen of Braxfield, he had a large family, including two sons who entered the army, one of whom, Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Honyman, distinguished himself in Egypt and South Africa before dying young of fever in Jamaica.
