Title
Woman with a Clay Pipe
Description
Images of peasants either smoking or preparing pipes were common in Dutch genre painting of the 17th century. Adriaen van Ostade produced numerous domestic scenes of this type. It is not known if Geikie had direct access to van Ostade's work, but he would have been familiar with reproduction prints produced by the Scottish engraver and etcher David Deuchar.
In this etching a seated woman smokes a pipe in the presence of a boy. The wicker creel by her side suggests that she is a fishwife.
