green waves - oh, it was very beautiful!
About 4a.m. we passed the Island of Elba, & it was quite clear, despite a cold, grey morning & such [?] wild sea. We hugged the coast & such [?] coast it was too, v. tame scenery indeed compared to what we had enjoyed the day before! The Italian peasants are interesting; the women with their beady black eyes & sparkling faces, wearing bright-hued kerchiefs tied over their heads & the little sunbaked children, in multi-coloured, short, petticoats & black felt hats. At all the stations, they come along the train with baskets of oranges & lemons to sell, big bright fresh picked fruit, we always "fell upon 'em" & soon cleared them of their ware! Oxen are chiefly used on the land, we saw lots of them ploughing, big, blue-grey ambling creatures. Lots of lambs were frolicking about & larks singing lustily - spring every where in the air! We expect to reach Rome at mid-day to-day.

26th Feb: The train, between Rome & Naples.
Rome is, alas, behind us & oh to be back in the enchanting & wonderful place! It is absolutely heavenly & quite beyond description - words fail me, so no use attempting to describe it - just first impressions, which no pen can ever describe! We have spent a long, glorious
