Skipness Castle, Cantyre [Kintyre]

Description

A large castle stands in ruins on the shores of a large stretch of water leading towards a stretch of land marked as 'Arran'. A number of smaller cottages and outbuildings cluster around the ruins, where two people stand observing the large castle. A road runs from the castle to the right of the image, where it crosses a stone bridge, upon which a man stands.

Item is dated 27 July 1833. Skipness Castle was originally built by the MacSween clan in the 13th century. An enclosure castle, it was added to over the centuries, when it fell into the hands of the Campbell clan in 1511. The Cambbells maintained ownership until 1933 when it passed to the care of Historic Environment Scotland.
