Title
The Pilgimage to Sumiyoshi (Miotsukushi) Chapter 14 from the series "A Modern Collection of Genji in Colour Prints" ("Ima Genji nishiki-e awase")
Description
Two women are shown standing on the shore, next to a boat. They wear brightly coloured kimono with floral designs. The woman in blue wears a kimono with long draping sleeves (furisode), a style of dress which indicates that she is unmarried. They share an elaborate parasol decorated with a long tailed turtle and a crane, two auspicious symbols. From the umbrella's struts hangs a red pillow.
This image derives from the serial novel or 'gokan', 'A Fake Murasaki and a Rustic Genji' (Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji) written by Ryutei Tanehiko and illustrated by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), that was published between 1829-1842. This story reworks elements from the 'Tale of Genji' and transposes the action from the Heian period (794-1185) to the time of the Muromachi era's Onin Wars (1467-1477).

Murasaki Shikibu 'Tale of Genji', 'Miotsukushi', Chapter 14. In this chapter Genji is promoted to Palace Minister. Emperor Suzaku abdicates and is succeeded by the Heir Apparent (Genji and Fujitsubo's son). The Lady of Akashi gives birth to Genji's daughter and Genji sends a nurse to Akashi to care for them both. Genji tells Murasaki about his daughter and she reacts jealously. Genji renews his relationship with Hanachirusato.
Genji decides to give thanks to the God of Sumiyoshi and set out on a pilgrimage with a large retinue. By chance, the Lady of Akashi is also visiting the shrine but when she learns that Genji is there making offerings she feels embarrassed by her low status. When Genji is told that her boat sailed past without stopping, he sends the Lady of Akashi poetry to reassure her of his affection.
Shortly before the Rokujo Haven dies she entrusts Genji with her daughter's future welfare. Genji decides that the Ise Priestess would make a suitable companion for his son, Emperor Reizei. In making this arrangement Genji risks disappointing the retired Emperor Suzaku, and frustrating the ambitions of the Highness of War and his old friend To no Chujo, the Acting Counsellor.
