Shakespeare Square was situated at the corner of Waterloo Place and North Bridge. It was demolished to make way for the General Post Office building which opened in 1866. The Waverley Gate project was completed in 2005 to transform the building into 21st century office spaces. Only the facade of the G.P.O.'s original building remains.
