This image has been chosen for the Edinburgh - Past and Present Exhibition by Rory Bremner, Satirical Impressionist - "This lithograph from 1822 shows better than most the contrast between the crowded, haphazard old town on the left and the regimented order of the New Town on the right. The old town is shrouded in the smoke which earned Edinburgh the nickname 'Auld Reekie' , while elegant ladies and gentlemen take the air on Calton Hill" Rory Bremner.
This image is taken from 'Four panoramic views of Edinburgh'. Mary Elton was Mary Stewart prior to her marriage. As Mary Stewart she produced a collection of panoramas titled "Four panoramic views of Edinburgh and the surrounding country". To view these images select Mary Stewart when searching.
Calton Hill is situated at the east end of Princes Street in Edinburgh. It rises to a height of 108 metres and is another of the city's hills created by volcanic activity. Several monuments stand on the hill. Most prominent amongst these are the Nelson Monument, built in the shape of a telescope, and the unfinished National Monument, modelled on the Parthenon in Athens.
