The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This mansion, the residence of Thomas Alexander Hog, Esq., is situated in the parish of Kirkliston, about nine miles west of Edinburgh. It is a large and commodious family residence, built about the year 1794, from plans by William Adam, architect.'
The full text may be viewed from the volume which is held at the Edinburgh and Scottish Collection in Edinburgh Central Library.
Newliston is still owned by decedents of the Hog family.
