In 1995 the Young Tenants Support Project was set up by the Wester Hailes Partnership (WHP). This was established to help young people uphold their tenancies at Wester Hailes. The project successfully attracted funding from various sources, allowing the creation of Cyberbytes - the UK's first internet café in a peripheral estate. The Cyberbytes Internet Cafe was located at Hailesland Place, in an award winning building but had to be demolished as it was situated on the route of the canal development.
On the 25th August 2001, the Union Canal was reopened through Wester Hailes, allowing passage into the centre of Edinburgh. When Wester Hailes was first constructed the canal was filled in and to reopen it, a completely new stretch of canal had to be made. This was constructed as part of the Millennium Project to re-establish the canal link between Edinburgh and Glasgow that existed from 1822 until 1965.
